The Journey Home
You may already know these two young men. But for those who do not, let me share and boast a little. This is Robert Phelps (right) and Sanders Pyle (left). Both Robert and Sanders are team captains for The Woodlands High School Bass Fishing Team. They are partners on the Off-Shore team, as well as the In-Shore.
As you may know, these two, along with Ryan Seckt and Robert Acker, went to the THSBA State Championship on Lake Texoma May 30 and May 31, 2026. More information on those results is upcoming. On Sunday, after Day 2 of 8 hours of fishing in the cruel, hot sun, and late night prep from Day 1 of the same, Robert and Sanders began the long journey back to The Woodlands, no trophy but heads held high. It was just North of Melissa, Texas. Robert and Sanders hopped in the truck, which has no a/c, entered Hwy 75 South. After entering the freeway, a vehicle passed the boys on the left and then got in front of them. Almost immediately upon entering the lane in front of the boys, BOOM!! The passing vehicle motor blew up, sending a blinding bloom of smoke and fumes into the truck with all the windows down. Within an instant the vehicle pulled to the right side of the road. Without hesitation or discussion, the boys pulled over to check on the welfare of the family in the minivan that had passed them. A family whom they had never met. Robert’s mother and I had been trailing the boys but were lagging behind, engrossed in a Dateline Podcast. We came upon the vehicle with the hood up and then Robert’s truck and boat. Our hearts began racing but we saw that both young men were outside of the vehicle and walking back to the truck. There was no accident, no injury, just a stranger that broke down in front of them. I pulled the car over and got out and rushed back to meet them. I quickly learned of the story and gave these young men a “well done, men.” Would anyone else have stopped to check on the welfare of these strangers? Perhaps. But without question, these young men did. So, again, well done young men, well done! |
Sterling Ridge Village Association
Kids Fishing Festival
4-11-2026
On Saturday, April 11, 2026 we got to participate in the Sterling Ridge Village Association’s Annual Kids Fishing Festival. What a great opportunity for our high school anglers to give back to the community that they represent. The anglers assisted in setting up the ol’ cane poles and bait some hooks for the kids. They got to sound the start horn to begin the competition as well. They walked around Pepperdale Park baiting hooks measuring fish and interacting with the community by coaching some of the kids on fishing 101-Having fun! The weather put a damper on some of the event but the kids hung in there and fished in the rain. Some even hung around to get their trophy and take a snapshot with the team. Thank you Sterling Ridge for letting us take part in this community event.
